Jarrett H. "Buddy" Boren
(1943-2011)
Resident of Dallas, Texas, departed
this life on February 28, 2011. He was 67 years old. Buddy was born in Dallas,
on September 7, 1943 to Samuel H. and OneyBeth H. Boren. He was raised in
Dallas, and attended Highland Park schools. He graduated from SMU in 1972 with a
degree in Geology. Active in the entertainment industry during the 60s and 70s,
he was involved with record production, concert promotions, entertainment
management, and film production. He produced a feature length film, Wheels of
Fire, about professional drag racing. Buddy and his family always loved auto
racing. As a teenager, he loved working on cars and drag racing with his brother
Jimmy. His passion eventually developed into a career. Buddy brought Grand Prix
racing to Dallas in 1984 with the first Formula One Grand Prix in Texas, which
was held at Fair Park. He produced seven other street race "Grand Prix" events
in Dallas and Addison between 1988-1996. He is credited with advancing Texans
interest in auto racing. Buddy was diagnosed with throat cancer during his time
with the Dallas Grand Prix. This diagnosis eventually forced Buddy to leave the
Grand Prix to fight his cancer, which he did successfully. After his cancer went
into remission, Buddy spent much of his time preserving Texas history, securing
"historical site" status for many sites in Texas, including the Dallas Naval Air
Station. After the turn of the millennium, Buddy began cycling to improve his
health. This interest soon blossomed into a passion that led Buddy to undertake
a number of bike rides to raise money and awareness for the battle against
cancer. As a cancer survivor, Buddy spent countless hours counseling and
supporting cancer patients and spreading his message, "Don't give up. Survival
is possible." Buddy was preceded in death by his father, Samuel H. Boren, his
brother, James N. Boren, and his mother, OneyBeth H. Boren. He is survived by
his daughter and son-in-law, Bentley and Benjamin Post of Austin, son and
daughter-in-law, Rhett and Jessica Boren of Conroe, sister and brother-in-law
Julie and Allyn Patrick of Dallas, and grandsons Bennett Post and Mason Boren.
He will be greatly missed. The family would like to thank Dr. Troy Neal and the
caring nursing staff at Baylor University Medical Center. A memorial service
honoring Buddy's life will be held at St. Michael and All Angels Church in
Dallas, Friday, March 4th at 11:00 a.m. A private burial will follow in Wills
Point, Texas. Donations in lieu of flowers may be made to the LIVESTRONG
foundation.
